Scheme: Mysterious Figure Landscape Painting

Mysterious Figure is a scheme of work where students explore people’s relationship with landscapes. Students studied the landscape painting of the artist Martin Gale to gain an understanding for composition, paint application and colour mixing. Students responded to a descriptive passage to digitally collage compositions using Photoshop to create a landscape composition for a painting. Students utilized these digital compositions as a reference point for their colour studies, paint application studies and their final painting. This scheme allowed students to convey the natural beauty of the Irish landscape through their own eyes. The placement of human figures in landscape art creates a connection between the viewers and the artwork whilst also encouraging storytelling. In this scheme students use the placement of figures to convey a story of mystery.
