Stories Over Tea

Second Year Students

Stories Over Tea is a community based short course that requires a meaningful interaction with communities of place and economic social issues. In this short course students created and exhibited socially engaging artwork in the form of a ceramic tea set in response to the economic decline of place.

Build relationships with community and place students engaged with their community through conversations with the older generation of the town about the decline of the local industry. Stories were gathered using audio recorders and were later used to inspire their art practise. Student’s class trip to their local Heritage Centre gave them the opportunity to see first-hand the products that were made in these industries.

Experiencing the arts Students had the chance to gain an insight into the studio life of the ceramic artist Orla O’Rourke at the stable door pottery located at Shanagarry Design Centre.

Creating and Making In groups students created a tea set out of clay. It is through making that students really gained an understanding and appreciation for the dedication and hard work that goes into making a piece of art.

Pop up Exhibition Students can take their work from behind closed doors of the art room and into the eyes of the public. It enabled students to consider their intentions in a social and cultural field creating and showcasing artwork that addresses real issues that its community is facing. Students become more conscious of their surroundings while also encouraging community participation.
